Resumo

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Background: Parkinson’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative condition with a clinic presentation of motor and non-motor symptoms. Early recognition of symptoms is essential to identify the disease.

Objective: To evaluate the quality of sleep in patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, treated by the SUS, in medical specialty centers in the cities of Criciúma, Içara, Forquilhinha, and Balneário Rincão.

Methods: In total, 32 patients with Parkinson's disease were evaluated using the validated Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale 2, related to the symptoms of sleep disorders. In addition, sociodemographic information, time of diagnosis, adjuvant therapy, and medications used for Parkinson's disease and sleep were collected.

Results: Regarding the epidemiological profile of the patients, they had a mean age of 68.94 ± 8.73 years and 56.3% were male. The time since diagnosis of Parkinson's disease was more than 5 years in 43.8% of individuals. All the patients interviewed used Prolopa and 40.6% associated Pramipexole with the treatment. Among the patients, 59.4% reported using sleeping medications, with 21.9% taking benzodiazepines, 18.8% antidepressants, and 15.6% antipsychotics. Adjuvant therapy was mentioned by 53.1% of respondents. Among the sleep disorders, nocturia (96.1%), difficulty staying asleep (81.4%), distressing dreams (62.6%), and snoring and breathing difficulties at night (62.5%) stood out.

Discussion: A high prevalence of sleep disorders was observed, in agreement with the literature, which recognizes sleep as a domain frequently affected in this population.

Conclusion: Sleep disorder–related symptoms were found to have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life, highlighting the importance of early detection of these alterations by health professionals during clinical assessment, in order to improve patients’ quality of life..
