CHILDREN OSTEOPETROSIS AND MANDIBULAR RECONSTRUCTION WITH BIPHASIC CALCIUM PHOSPHATE CERAMICS – CASE REPORT

Osteopetrosis is a rare, recessive genetic transmission disease, in which is determined a poor osteoclastic activity. Osseous deposition is not remodeled, leading to abnormal and poor vascularized
tissue formation. There are other hematologic systemic manifestations due to compensatory extramedullary hematopoiesis, not on the scope of this case report. We related the case of a child with osteopetrosis and the sequential history of mandibular osseous cists, abscesses, osteomyelitis, serial osseous sequestrectomies, and prolonged antibiotic therapy, unsuccessfully partial mandibular reconstruction with plate exposition. We then planned a mandibular reconstruction with a prototyped mandibula in osseous ceramic, debridement of scared and fibrotic soft tissue, and a pectoral muscle cutaneous flap to local soft tissue coverture. In 3 years of post-operatory follow-up, no complications
were computed.
