Abstract

Background: Non-melanoma skin neoplasms, mainly represented by basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, is the most prevalent neoplasm in Brazil and worldwide. Objectives: To evaluate the impairment of surgical margins of non-melanoma skin neoplasms excised by a plastic surgery residency program during 2020. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of all cases of non-melanoma skin neoplasms excised by the service. Results: In the analyzed period, 57 surgical procedures for excision of non-melanoma skin neoplasms were performed. Of the 57, surgical margins were positive in 6 of them, with a prevalence of 10.52%. Discussion: In an Italian study published in March 2013, 3957 operated skin tumors were evaluated, where 14% had positive margins, a prevalence similar to that found in our study, which was 10%. Conclusion: The increasing incidence of skin neoplasms requires training of plastic surgeons in terms of diagnosis, management, reconstruction and prevention.
